Gorges was part of the Marches du Poitou and depended on the lordship of Clisson. Its origin is very old. Adjacent to its famous neighbour Clisson, its name reminds us that the valley of the Sèvre Nantaise is narrower here (Gorges comes from the Latin gurgites which means place where the river narrows). Over the centuries, Gorges has been a holiday resort, first for the court of Clisson and then for the rich merchants of Nantes. Surrounded by vineyards, both on the right bank of the Sèvre - direction Mouzillon - and on its left bank - direction Saint-Fiacre - the town can be proud to hold the oldest parchment dated 1636 mentioning the existence of the "muscadet" plan in the commune.
