If this commune was occupied since prehistoric times - as evidenced by dolmens and burial mounds - its territory also includes the Waïfer cave which, according to legend, served as a refuge for the Duke Waïffre who was being pursued by the troops of Pepin the Short. But the reputation of the village remains mainly attached to the abbey of Lantouy of the 10th-11th centuries, which some accounts attribute to the creation of Saint Namphaise. Its remains, including those of a typical Quercy church from the end of the 11th century, dominate the Lot and the Lantouy chasm, where the legend according to which the bell of a sunken convent rings every 24 May at midnight can be told.
