Mondorff is a border village with Luxembourg, renowned for the medicinal virtues of its waters. The Messins burned the village in 1387 in retaliation. The Treaty of Versailles in 1769 established the present-day border, splitting the parish of Mondorff in two. The Luxembourg part kept the name Mondorff until 1872, when the first post office was opened. Following the delivery of a postmark, which mistakenly showed only a single final "F", the Luxembourg part of the twin town adopted the new name of Mondorf-les-Bains to emphasize their spa treatment since the birth of the health resort.
