Rumelange was the largest iron ore mining center in the Luxembourg basin. Its last exploitation closed in 1978. As a testimony of the primordial role of the mines and the traces left on the landscape, the national museum of the iron mines is the main museum you should visit in the region. The surrounding forested hills offer a network of well-developed trails. It is the birthplace of Jean-Pierre Bausch (1891-1935), a former miner, who was also a deputy and mayor of Rumelange. He is a well-known personality in the Terres Rouges, even more than 80 years after his death. He was a spokesman for the workers.
