It is probably one of the oldest villages in Luxembourg. Archaeological excavations have shown that the site of Mamer has attracted man since the Stone Age and then became the crossroads of trade and military routes. The vicus (village) and the thermal baths on which the present town was established were discovered in 1972 and 1973. The oldest manuscript document mentioning the name Mambra dates from 960. Liutgardis, daughter of the Ardennes Count Wigerich, donated the hamlet of Mamer to the Abbey of St. Maximin in Trier. The name Mambra will remain until the 14th century and then evolved into: Mambre, Mammern, Mammer, and Mamer.
