Esch-sur-Sûre is a romantic town set in the mountains and surrounded by the Sûre river. It is a peaceful place and a must for those who love to rest in the middle of nature. The foundations of the village date back to the year 927, when the so-called Meningaud began the construction of a castle to protect himself from the Hungarian invasions. The village was subsequently fortified in the 14th century, but part of the fortifications were destroyed in 1671. Dominated by the ruins of its castle, the village today consists of a few narrow streets irregularly lined with old whitewashed Ardennes houses with mossy slate roofs
