The locality of Schoenfels appears for the first time in 846 in a document of Bishop Hetto of Trier under the name of Scindalasheim. The original castle, built in 1292, was rebuilt several times over the years but was stripped of its fortifications by the French in 1683. It was then burnt down with the village in 1690. If the village is of little interest to travellers today, the castle keep, the only survivor of history, with its courtyard, is magnificent. In addition to its ruins, Schoenfels also offers several hiking trails with magnificent panoramic views of the Mamer valley.
