Vianden is a charming medieval town on the banks of the River Our. In the Middle Ages, it was the capital of the county of Vianden, which included 136 villages. The town was completely fortified, surrounded by ramparts flanked by 24 semicircular towers and pierced by 5 gates. The castle of the Counts of Vianden, built into the rock after being left in a state of ruin, has now been faithfully restored. Vianden is still inhabited by the ghost of Victor Hugo, who stayed here on several occasions and whose house can be visited today. Take the chairlift for an impressive view of the town and its surroundings.
