A century later, Stevenson would not have disowned his lines: "Saint-Germain has preserved its bancels or faïsses, which carve out the sides of the mountain, and its chestnut trees...". It was here, in the heart of the Protestant Cévennes, that the Abbé du Chayla, who had come to lead the missions that were to convert the Huguenots, established his residence and set up a seminary. He is buried in the tomb he had dug for himself at the entrance to the church choir. In the village square, a statue pays tribute to the Cévenols, the work of a young Iranian artist enchanted by the Cévennes, depicting a massive man grappling with the stones of the land.
