The vast limestone plateau, commonly known as the plaine de Montbel, has given rise to a number of sayings that speak volumes about the harshness of the place: "To cross the plaine de Montbel, it's better to wear a cape than a knife". In other words, the rigors of the climate on this causse desertique can be more dangerous than a possible encounter with brigands, who made this place their hideout in more troubled times. This limestone plateau also has a special geological feature: it is dotted with small depressions into which rainwater sinks, only to re-emerge a few kilometers further south.
