The village of Arzenc lies on the banks of the Chapeauroux, which rises at the Col de l'Ane a little higher up. Its name may have been given to it by the Benedictine monks who built the church in the 12th century. The word Arzenc comes from the pre-Latin word arisa, meaning river, and the suffix inco, meaning place. Arzenc would thus mean "place of the river". Between 1980 and 1982, the parishioners restored the church to its original Auvergne Romanesque style. The surrounding area is dotted with numerous wrought-iron and stone crosses. A short hike, available from the tourist office, is devoted to them.
