The commune, formerly called Saint-Jean-la-Chan, owes its name to the Fouillouse stream that runs through it and has its source there. On the last foothills of the Margeride, the village sits at an altitude of 1,323 m, in a setting of pastures and forests. The church, dating from the 13th century, originally a Benedictine chapel, has been restored by the parishioners while its bell tower was rebuilt in 1819. Outside, the ruins of the cloister of the former monastery remain, incorporated in the wall of the current town hall. In the hamlet of Cellier, north-east of Saint-Jean, a square tower can be seen, which served as a defense and as a food reserve
