Founded at the end of the 19th century, when coal was the town's leading employer, Les Mages did not suffer the demographic decline of some of its neighbors when the mines closed. The commune attracted artists: Georges Beaucquier, painter and initiator in Biot of the museum dedicated to Fernand Léger, of whom he was a collaborator (the village houses a fresco by this painter), but also the Schoenenberger family, who also created a museum and a beautiful hotel. Biot is also home to the vestiges of its industrial past: spinning mills (there were at least a dozen!), mills, glassworks and a small heritage of dry stonework.
