The territory of the commune occupies the forest plateau and descends to the carriageway Julius Caesar, located 100 m below. The historic center, along with archeological sites of the ancient Gallo-Roman bourgado, borders the slopes of the Montmorency forest. Formerly agricultural and wine-growing, the city was the framework for a large operation of gypsum from 1815. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the city was created, resulting from its division with the neighboring municipality of Saint-Leu. The Taverny Plain is now home to residential neighborhoods. The city has 26,000 inhabitants.
