The origins of La Rochette go back a long way, having yielded numerous remains - standing stones, Neolithic axes, ancient coins, Merovingian weapons... - The oldest of these testify to prehistoric occupation around the Pet-au-diable bridge linking La Rochette to Vaux-le-Pénil, a toponym of course referring to "stone". But La Rochette was only mentioned in the 11th century as a dependency of the Saint-Sauveur priory in Melun. In addition to its immediate proximity to the Fontainebleau forest, La Rochette is home to a number of monuments, including a 13th-century church and the 18th-century Château de La Rochette, classified as a historic monument.
