From 1860 onwards, the pretty village became the center of a major cultural activity. Artists from all over Europe and even Japan, such as Seiki Kuroda, the precursor of modern Japanese painting, enjoyed painting along the Loing or in the medieval streets. Great names from the world of the arts have come to Grez-sur-Loing, including Delius, Kume, Nordstrom, Robinson, the Goncourt brothers and Stevenson, as well as historical figures such as Blanche de Castille and Louise de Savoie. Along the banks of the Loing, the walk leads to the two wash-houses in the 14th-century garden immortalized on canvas by Corot.
