Rocamadour du Gâtinais, so named for its fortifications and hanging gardens overlooking the Fusain river, is an ancient Gallic oppidum that became a stronghold in the Middle Ages. To the east, the fortified town, once enclosed by ramparts, has preserved the vestiges of its past: 16th-century houses, the Tour Madeleine, the Saint-André porch tower, part of the ramparts, the tower of the Saint-Thugal church, the Saint-Séverin abbey... To the west, the new town includes the Hôtel-Dieu, the Notre-Dame church and the former Templar cellar, and was home to commercial activities. Downstream, the river Fusain flows by, its banks dotted with fulling and tanning mills and seventeen washhouses.
