The history of Montigny-sur-Loing is ancient with its prehistoric remains in the area of the street des Courlus and Pente-des-Brosses. The village is also mentioned in the 11th century under the name of Monteniae, when it was attached to the county of Gâtinais. It was also named Montigny-sous-Grez and Montigny-en-Gâtinais. In the 19th century, it was the home of the Polish general Kosciuszko who saved the region from the plundering of the Cossack soldiers during the French campaign.
