Gretz-Armainvilliers had a turbulent 19th century. Two families, the Pereires and the Rothschilds, whose properties were located on either side of the railroad, fought a land war. The Pereires, founders of Arcachon, bought almost 4,000 ha in the Armainvilliers forest and built a superb château. In its grounds, on October 9, 1890, engineer-inventor Clément Ader launched the Eole, a steam-powered "airplane" of his own design. Admittedly, the machine only made a flea hop, but the idea was launched... As Clément Ader put it: "Whoever is master of the air will be master of the Universe". A prophetic statement!
