Bois-le-Roi is a charming commune of the French Furtinais nestled between the forest of Fontainebleau and the Seine. It lives at the pace of water, forest, hippic sport and arts. Since the end of the eighteenth century, the horse is king with the race field arranged for the earl of Artois and the duke of Chartres, ferus of horse racing. Although the race field has been abandoned for the benefit of the Solle Valley on the road between Melun and Fontainebleau, Bois-le-Roi has a long tradition of hippic sport. To date there are three equestrian centers and several events are organized each year around the horse. Since 1872, many artists have come to seek the tranquility of nature and inspiration to Bois-le-Roi, which is why Moreau Vauthier has given him the name "art village". Among the artists of the first hour there was the novelist Louis Noir, the poet Gustave Mathieu, composer Olivier Métra and the panoramic painter Castellani. Many others will follow, some will only pass like Anatole France, who signs his novel Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard, or Edmond Rostand. Some will be there, including painters Robert Noir, Aimé Perret, Alfred Roll or Georges Moreau de Tours. Proud of this tradition, the commune multiplies artistic events by organizing painting salons and regular concerts. Resolutely turned to nature and culture, Bois-le-Roi is worth a visit.
