Formerly known as Longus Pons, the town was mentioned in the 6th century in connection with a battle fought by the children of Clovis on the death of their father. The priory of Longpont was frequented by many kings of France, notably Saint Louis. Château de Lormoy was one of the residences of Belgian King Leopold II. A place of European interest thanks to its former priory, the origin of the village, and a stopover on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, the town is a member of the Federation of Cluniac Sites. A few years ago, the Council of Europe awarded the sites in this federation the title of Great European Cultural Route.
