The tower of Montlhéry castle dominates the valley in the distance. The estate became part of the crown in the 11th century and the castle was rebuilt in the 13th. The present master tower, rebuilt many times, was refurbished by Olivier de Clisson after the Hundred Years' War. In the 19th century, it was the site of numerous scientific experiments, including the telegraph and the calculation of the speed of light. Montlhéry is also home to the famous Autodrome, Paris' first motor racing circuit, which opened in 1924. It has become one of the most famous in the world for its numerous speed records, and has been awarded the "Patrimoine du XXe siècle" label.
