In the Middle Ages, the village developed around two important abbeys, Saint-Pierre de Préaux and Saint-Léger de Préaux, making it one of the most active centres of monastic life in the Duchy of Normandy. The religious buildings, which constituted the economic engine of the territory, were sold as national property and then destroyed shortly after the Revolution. Today, the Préaltiens and Préaltiennes foster a friendly village spirit in this small town located 4 km south of Pont-Audemer.
