Between the valleys of the Risle and the Seine, Roumois was once a privileged region for hunting, and Illeville-sur-Montfort was certainly a very early inhabited place. Already in Roman times, a military camp and a rich villa were built there, two roads crossed the commune, strategically well placed. In the 11th century, Illeville was called Willerville, i. e. the "Domaine de Guillaume". Is it William the Conqueror or William, son of Torf, who is it? It is difficult to decide, historians do not agree on this point. What is certain is that Illeville belonged as a Norman village to the King of England until Philip Augustus took Normandy from the English.
