Authou is the smallest municipality in the canton of Montfort. Today, with a population of 337 inhabitants, called Authonians, the village had several names originally Celtic, Autouel, Autone and Autou, which indicate a low place, the bottom of a valley. This is how Authou, located on the left bank of the Risle, at the confluence of the Authou torrent, presented itself; the latter offered such a hydraulic power that the commune had many mills during the 19th century.
