Nestled at an altitude of almost 1,000 meters in the Haut-Jura regional park, it was once a center for the cutting of precious stones and watchmaking. To this day, only the Dalloz factory remains, a name that beckons as it was here that the founder of the legal publishing house of the same name was born. In Septmoncel, milk is processed to make Bleu de Gex cheese, of which this is the birthplace. Septmoncel is also known for its "lacets", a road with many bends over 15 kilometers that links it to Saint-Claude. Septmoncel also boasts lookouts and educational trails: Les Chamois, Les Diots and Les Lapidaires. The commune has merged with Les Molunes.
