The bastide has a controversial origin, founded in 1287 by Philippe le Bel for some, and by Jean de Grailly for others. The layout of the bastide seems to have had a central axis. Nevertheless, it had a castle and a walled enclosure. The church of Lochac, located outside the village, dates back to the origins of the bastide. Its style is somewhere between Romanesque and Gothic. Inside, you'll find a12th-century baptismal font, a17th-century gilt chalice and a19th-century Christ aux outrages. The view from the ramparts over the valley to the Château de Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne is superb.
