The bastide has a controversial origin, founded in 1287 by Philip the Fair for some, created by Jean de Grailly for others. The plan of the bastide seems to have included a central axis. Despite this, it had a castle and a wall. The church of Lochac located outside the village dates from the origin of the bastide. It is of an intermediate style between the Romanesque and the Gothic. Inside you can see a baptismal font from the 12th century, a gilt chalice from the 17th century, and an outraged Christ from the 19th century. The panorama is superb from the ramparts, over the valley to the castle of Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne
