Mareuil en Périgord, often called Mareuil-sur-Belle, is the seat of one of the 4 ancient baronies of Périgord. Hervé de Mareuil, a great character, was named one of the most important barons of Poitou. Another illustrious figure was Raymond de Mareuil, bishop of Bordeaux in 1142. This dynamic town is well worth a visit, with its Wednesday market and friendly shopkeepers. The town also attracts a number of foreign visitors, notably from the UK. And when it comes to culture, you won't want to miss the château, with its mix of eras. Nearby, discover the Tourbières de Vendoire natural site for an instructive stroll.
