The place has been inhabited since Roman antiquity, but the village as we see it today was founded in the 15th century by the bishops of Mariana, hence its name (vesco means bishop). Vescovato was the summer residence of the bishops and an episcopal see until 1570. The village can also boast the birth of several chroniclers: Filippini, Ceccaldi and Monteggiani. Matteo Buttafuoco was also born here, who corresponded with J.-J. Rousseau and evoked with him the idea of a Corsican constitution before the letter. On the village square, it was customary in the Middle Ages to dance the Moorish dance, to commemorate the victory of Ugo Colonna over the Moors.
