The transportation revolution of the 19th century spurred its development. The old tanneries, spinning mill and workers' houses bear witness to this prosperous period. Other 19th-century buildings are part of the reconstruction campaign carried out by the German authorities in 1871. The water, though tamed, is still present, and the Erstein nature reserve is criss-crossed by a dense network of former branches of the Rhine, where you'll come across pseudacores irises, swift frogs, nuthatches and many species of dragonfly. Attractive half-timbered fishermen's houses are a reminder of the importance of this activity in the region.
