Just outside Sarlat, on a plateau on the banks of the Grande Beune, the small village of Marquay is home to a number of beautiful Périgord houses with roofs of lauze, the heavy limestone slabs quarried nearby. Their original ochre color evolves with time and humidity, taking on a grayer hue reminiscent of slate. The village wraps around its fortified Romanesque church with its massive bell tower. The commune boasts an exceptional heritage, including the authentic prehistoric shelter of Cap Blanc and the majestic Château de Puymartin and its legend of the Dame Blanche. Several hiking trails in the vicinity.
