Before 1793, Domfessel belonged to the county of Sarrewerden, later becoming part of Alsace. Towards the end of the 18th century, excavations were carried out by Pastor Ringel. These uncovered the remains of a large Roman villa, stretching over 300 meters and dating back to the 1st century. Another major point of interest in the village is the Church of St. Gall, built in the first half of the 14th century and fortified for the protection of its inhabitants. Its homogeneity and proportions make it one of the jewels of Gothic art in Alsace. Henri de Sarrewerden, then parish priest of Domfessel, is said to have initiated its construction.
