Located in the heart of the Lorraine coal basin, the town of Freyming-Merlebach originates from the merger in 1971 of two neighbouring communes, crossed by the river Merle. The two villages, born at the dawn of the 17th century, participated in the subsistence economy of a wooded region with poor soil and coal mining. From now on, the town will focus on the leisure and history sector, by converting the mining sites. Inter-communal business parks are being developed, as well as green and cultural tourism. In the forest of Warndt, it is possible to make beautiful walks in family or with bicycle.
