A small town of some 7,500 inhabitants, the industrial boom of 18th century metallurgy and the mining towns of the 1960s transformed Hombourg-Haut from a village. But what a village! The origins of this town date back to the 12th century to the last Count of Hombourg, it was only the beginning of what was to become a fortified medieval town for which many bishops, nobles and other rulers of Lorraine fought. It was Jacques de Lorraine who erected what is now called the old Hombourg, rich in the vestiges and glory of the past. The heritage is exceptional: the collegiate church of Saint-Etienne (13th century) and the chapel of Sainte-Catherine built between 1250 and 1270 are classified as historical monuments, the other sites are not to be outdone and are a perfect illustration of the role of this authentic city, providing a refuge for people from all over the region and showing the omnipotence of the Church. To discover the old Hombourg, follow the footpath starting from the Place Jacques de Lorraine.
