Saint-Avold is part of the coal basin. Its inhabitants are called the Naborians. Founded in the 6th century by a monk who created an oratory, then a monastery, the city developed under the leadership of the bishops of Metz, then, in the 11th century, under the protection of a lay lord. Over time, Saint-Avold definitely became a commercial crossroads thanks to its geographical position. Proud of this past, Saint-Avold continues to develop its economy thanks to the petrochemical industry and turns to the exploitation of its forestry resources. A rich historical and industrial heritage can be discovered in the town and its surroundings.
