Petite-Rosselle shares much of its history with the town of Grande-Rosselle. The town of Rosselle was founded in 1290 and the separation into two separate communes took place in 1326. These two towns are separated by a river, the Rosselle. The coal basin, around Saint-Avold and Forbach, is also the Rosselle Country whose name comes from the town of Petite-Rosselle known for housing the famous museum of the coal basin, testimony to the important mining past of this region. This museum has recently been renovated to allow visitors to see the coal mines as if they were there. The life-size mine.
