Meillant is an ancient town dating back to Gallic times. The name Meillant comes from the Celtic Mediolanon, Latinized as Mediolanum, meaning "place on the sacred plain". It could therefore have been an important place, containing a sanctuary, as all Mediolanum are important sites (the most famous being Milan in Italy). In the 15th and 16th centuries, the seigneury of Meillant belonged to the d'Amboise family. Pierre d'Amboise, followed by his son Charles I d'Amboise and grandson Charles II d'Amboise de Chaumont, played an active role in building the Château de Meillant that exists today.
