In Aubusson, six centuries of tapestry contemplate you. But as far as the origin is concerned, there is history and legend. Legend has it that it was the Saracens, defeated after the battle of Poitiers in 732 and then settled on the banks of the Creuse, who introduced this tradition. They would have found there pure water and sheep's wool for weaving. The only certainty is the existence of cloth mills from this period. In any case, it is in Felletin that the first names of upholsterers emerge: Jacques Bonnyn in 1457 and Jean Béraigne in 1473. The workshops of the Gobelins, Flanders, Mortlake or Florence compete by producing sumptuous pieces. Then, it is in the workshops of the Marches that production is perpetuated and intensified. The Aubusson tapestry has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. The town also offers a rich architectural heritage with its turret houses, its châtelet, its clock tower... The panorama from the top of the town is magnificent over the narrow streets and terraced gardens. Market on Saturday morning.
