Although the site appears to have been occupied since Neolithic times, it is known that the Knights of the Teutonic Order settled here in the 13th century. A former wine-growing and farming town, Rixheim's strategic location has enabled it to make the most of its industrial and commercial assets. With 13,000 inhabitants, the town ranks 6th in the French department and is home to part of the Peugeot factory. It's also where the Rhone-Rhine canal ends its journey. Forests also play an important role here, covering 985 hectares in two massifs, Hardt and Tannenwald, much appreciated by walkers who love greenery.
