Murten, Morat in French, population 6,000, has remained under Germanic influence, so most of the inscriptions in this small fortified town are in German. In fact, German is spoken by a majority of the population, compared with only 12% for French. The town lies on the north-south route between Bern and Lausanne. It is the capital of the Lac district, as it is known in the canton of Fribourg. Don't miss the famous Morat cream cake, or in winter the superb Christmas market.
