Ljubaništa/Љубаништа (pronounced "lioubanichta") has around 140 inhabitants (85% Macedonians) and is part of the Ohrid municipality. The village lies on the Albanian border, southeast of Lake Ohrid, below Mount Galičica and along road P 1301, 11.5 km east of Pogradec (Albania) and 27 km south of the city of Ohrid(via Dolno Konjsko, Lagadin, Peštani and Trpejca). Local bus services: ask at the Ohrid bus station. Also: boat services from Ohrid. The last village in North Macedonia on the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid, Ljubaništa is home to a religious tourist mecca: the Monastery of St. Naum. It was founded around 900 AD by the Bulgarian missionary, writer and theologian Naum of Ohrid, one of the first evangelizers of the Slavs. His tomb is the object of deep veneration by Christians from all over the world. But people also come here for the charm of the place: a beautiful church, free-roaming peacocks doing cartwheels and the pretty little Lake Ostrovo, where the most important resurgences feeding Lake Ohrid are to be found. The monastery is located right next to the border post with Albania and 2.7 km south-west of the village of Ljubaništa itself. Ljubaništa enjoys magnificent scenery, with the highest peaks of Mount Galičica in the background. It has small beaches, guesthouses, restaurants and a decent campsite (campljubanista.mk).
