Completely destroyed by French artillery in 1915, this village is now famous for its 2.7 km long beach on the shores of Lake Prespa. But due to muddy areas and the presence of algae, only a small portion is suitable for swimming. This has recently been resurfaced with sand from elsewhere. It is equipped with a pontoon, deckchairs and parasols for hire, as well as two astonishing futuristic-looking bars. Stenje is also a good base for hiking in the national parks of Galičica, in Northern Macedonia, or Prespa, in Albania, as well as for a boat trip to the island of Golem Grad, near the hamlet of Konjsko. Although tourism is beginning to take off, some of Stenje's inhabitants still make their living from fishing. The fish are caught by boat with nets, but also in the traditional way, with weirs and nets made of reeds. This technique keeps the fish alive after capture, rather than refrigerating them.
