It was a mecca for walrus (or sea cow) hunting, attracting many Europeans, particularly Basques, who not only hunted, but also slaughtered and butchered walruses to extract the coveted oil. Unfortunately, this industry was so intense that it led to the total disappearance of the species from the Magdalen Islands. Today, Old-Harry is a peaceful village with a small historical complex run by the Conseil des Anglophones Madelinots. It recounts the life of this community through the ages. Old-Harry is also the gateway to the Grande Échouerie beach.
