Very close to Brighton and yet so different, Lewes is somewhat of the archetypal small rural and historic English town as one imagines it to be. Lulled by the green hills of the Downs and rich in medieval history, it's a place full of character, with the ruins of its Norman castle, shops, antique shops and excellent pubs, including the famous Harveys Brewery, where you can get your hands on local beer. Every year in November, the town owes its fame to Lewes Bonfire, which celebrates Guy Fawkes Night with large bonfires and processions attracting tens of thousands of people.
