To the south-east of Maidstone lies Leeds Castle. It looks like something out of a fairy tale, and to some, one of the most beautiful castles in the world. This former Norman fortress, privately owned by six medieval queens of England and also used by Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, has the distinction of having been built on two small islands in the middle of a natural lake and surrounded by parkland and gardens covering over 200 hectares. It's one of Britain's most visited historic buildings and the ideal excursion for a romantic getaway. Buses leave from London Victoria to visit it.
