With its 2,700 inhabitants, this small Sussex village is best known for its majestic castle and scientific observatory. The first part of the name, Herst, has an Anglo-Saxon origin meaning wooded hill, and Monceux was the family name of the local lord. If you're visiting in August, don't miss its very popular medieval festival (and the biggest in the country!). The Observatory Science Centre on Wartling Road is an interactive experience for the whole family. It was once home to the Royal Greenwich Observatory. Not far from Herstmonceux is the Drusillas wildlife park.
