Although named after the Haestingas, a 7th-century tribe, the town is best known for its famous battle of 1066. It was also one of the "Cinque Ports" dedicated to defending the country against invasion. Fishermen are numerous here, but the absence of a quay means that they have to tow their trawlers onto the beach, where they can be seen when they're not sailing. The old town is the main local attraction, with its ancient houses along High Street. Here you can stroll through the Net Shops and twittens, the narrow Sussex lanes, and dine on fresh fish in the harbour.
