Azé is best known for its prehistoric site. The Grotte de la Rivière and the Grotte Préhistorique, both open to the public, reveal wonders that have been witnessed for 300,000 years. But the town is also renowned for its rich cultural and wine-growing heritage. While the latter has left its mark on the landscape, with some 500 hectares of vines producing Mâconnais wine, the town's historic monuments are not to be outdone: the château, the washhouses and the 19th-century halles, located on the Place du Cèdre (planted here in 1821) and home to the Sunday morning market, are well worth a detour.
