Former stronghold of the Sires de Beaujeu, the village dominates the vineyards from the top of a spur. Several castles or remarkable buildings are worth a visit. It is said that the first vines of the Beaujolais were planted in Juliénas, in Roman times. The vineyard is thus very old and located at the hinge of the gamay beaujolais and the chardonnay mâconnais. It was the first Beaujolais to be covered by the media, since the journalists of the Canard Enchaîné, who took refuge in Lyon during the Occupation, became passionate about it and took it upon themselves to praise it in their columns. Julienas can be drunk both young and old. Four villages share the appellation area.
